A question from @SFromley on Twitter:
you still use cheques (although you can’t spell it) to pay for stuff, right? What’s wrong with you people!?
My answer: Some people do. Especially for large regular payments, like a mortgage or rent. There's often no other way to do it. In terms of going into a store and paying for something, yes. There are whole check verification businesses set up to prove to merchants that your check won't bounce. It's less common than it used to be, for convenience reasons. I think the reason some cling to checks is because it makes it easier for them to reconcile their bank statements. My parents do it.
I personally have never reconciled my bank statement. What is wrong with us? Hmmm. That requires a bit more thinking.
